New year… new wallpaper, fresh paint, and time to level up your living space. Am I right?
The pandemic has had an impact on every aspect of our lives. So, it’s no surprise that, in response to being cooped up for the best part of two years, the nation is itching to invite the outside in. Nor is it beyond imagination that homeowners are injecting their household with joy using bright colours and patterns.
According to home renovation and design platform Houzz, which boasts a community of over 65 million home design enthusiasts, lavish and opulent interiors are set to be the hottest trends of 2022. Gone are the days of “Mrs Hinch Grey”, minimalism, and open plan living. All hail the arrival of more defined, homely, multifunctional, and sustainable interiors.
Here, I’ve compiled a list of the top eight hottest interior design trends for 2022:
The “it” colour palette and patterns for 2022 are inspired by the liberation of the 60s and 70s. This includes highly textured fabrics with vibrant patterns. Plus, with sage green, mustard yellow, and terracotta being popularly researched, interiors are set to be more bold and cheerful this year. Moreover, floral, geometric, and abstract wallpapers are predicted to be the bestsellers, as are pin-legged furniture pieces.
Designers have adopted the “make do and mend” mentality. When levelling up your home this year, consider designs that are likely to stay on trend for years to come. At the same time, sustainability is not only fashionable but is great for safeguarding the future of the planet. Take the opportunity to learn and become mindful of how your furniture is sourced and made.
It’s a well-known fact that bathroom and kitchen upgrades are the quickest way to add value to your home. This year, luxurious, spa and hotel-themed bathrooms are set to take centre stage. Bathrooms featuring natural materials and underfloor heating are predicted to be a popular option. In fact, ‘sauna showers’ and ‘freestanding baths’ have been popular search terms already in 2022.
What’s cooking in the kitchen? Chunkier, or waterfall effect worktops are predicted to be all the rage. Some designers have even set the trend for worktops that continue up the wall, to form a continuous splashback. Plus, quartz worktops have already become a highly searched product in January.
The pandemic forced most homes to reconsider the space available, with many transforming guest rooms into home offices or implementing space-saving strategies to accommodate work, exercise, play, and relaxation. This theme is likely to continue in 2022.
With the rise of multifunctionality, bedrooms are predicted to return to being sanctuaries of comfort and luxury. Panelling is rumoured to remain a favourite to create a luxurious and timeless feel. Plus, layered linen and soft furnishings in neutral tones add to a sense of relaxation and cosiness.
It would seem lockdowns are now a thing of the past, and yet outdoor gatherings remain a firm favourite among friends. Designers predict that homeowners will treat outdoor spaces as an extension of inside living. Family, friends, and food mean that outdoor dining and cooking areas are anticipated to be the new must-haves.
Exciting news for proud plant parents. Biophilic design is due to be a popular choice for interior design in 2022. The art of bringing the outdoors in has increased in prevalence due to the pandemic, and there’s no sign of it retreating any time soon.
